Phitsanulok tours begin from your arrival at Phitsanuloke Airport, then depart for the ruins of the ancient capital of Sukhothai, stopping to visit the excellent Ramkhamhaeng Museum. The historical park features ruins of the very extensive city, which flourished in the mid-13th to the late 14th century. The park is beautifully maintained, with ponds and moats such as the old capital had. We also visit to Wat Si Chum and its imposing seated Buddha.

We visit Si Satchanalai Historical Park, where the deputy king ruled until he ascended the throne in its elegant temples. The ruins date from the 13th to 15th centuries and are generally less restored and visited than those at Sukhothai, although no less inspiring. One of the many impressive sites, also named Wat Chang Lom, was completed in 1291. Stucco elephants flank its Sri Lanka-style pagoda.

We spend the night at Phitsanulok. In the evening you can take a pedal tricycle for a city tour of Phitsanulok which will be ended at the night market nears the river. There is an outdoor local restaurant which is famous for flying vegetables. They cook a dish of fried leaf vegetables called "morning glory" and when it's finished cooking, they throw it high up into the air and catch it again in a pan. They also throw it to a person high up on the back of a truck. Some of the customers even got to try catching them. They wore aprons to cover their clothes. Most of them did pretty well.

The next morning, we visit Wat Mahathat, which is reputed to have the most beautiful Buddha in Thailand, "Phra Buddha Chinaraj". The image is of impressive size but what makes it strikingly unique is the flame-like halo around the head and torso. The Wat had lovely black and gold columns inside.

Continue to the Buddha Foundry where you can watch large bronze Buddha images being made. A short walk across the street from there is the Thawee Folklore Museum, considered the best of its kind in the country. This museum is filled with odd, fascinating artifacts from Lower Northern Thailand, covering everything from musical instruments to village handicrafts, agricultural implements, tools and even an authentic reproduction of a Lower Northern village home.
